Inquiry Phase 3 - Explain
The third phase of inquiry is called 'Explain'. While there can be many variations on the structure of an inquiry-based learning journey, the most important aspect of the 4Ex2 model is that Explain always follows Explore. This ensures student-centered learning and allows students to communicate their own sense-making. In the Explain phase, students should be asked to interpret what they have just explored and to communicate and provide evidence for their interpretations. This is also the time when students can verify and justify or modify their previously held beliefs. By creating a provable synthesis of their acquired knowledge, skills or attitudes, students make sense of their experiences.
Please summarize your thinking and check for understanding by reading a definition and a rationale for Virtual Field Trips. Once you have considered the guiding questions, go on to read some of the specific suggestions for using Virtual Field Trips in your classroom.
Guiding Questions
Questions in the Explain phase attempt to help students interpret and communicate their findings. Ideally, they will also consolidate a student's understanding.
